THE DISTRICT ASSEMBLIES

The District Assemblies are sub-government bodies or agencies that have been established as part of the local government system to administer the various localities in the country. The District chief Executives are the heads of the District Assemblies.

In the Ghana, the district Assembly has been divided into three types depending on the population of each locality.


TYPES OF DISTRICT ASSEMBLIES

1.      Metropolitan Assemblies: Metropolitan District Assemblies have a minimum population of two hundred and fifty thousand people. There are currently six (6) Metropolitan Assemblies in Ghana. These are, Kumasi Metropolitan District, Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, Accra metropolis district, Tema metropolitan district, Tamale metropolitan district, and Sekondi Takoradi metropolitan assembly

2.      Municipal Assemblies: Municipal District Assemblies have a minimum population of ninety-five thousand people. There are currently fifty-six (56) Municipal Assemblies in Ghana

3.      District Assemblies: District Assemblies have a minimum population of seventy-five thousand people. The District Assemblies are 154.

In all, there are 216 assemblies in Ghana


SOURCES OF FUND OF DISTRICT ASSEMBLIES

The District Assemblies have three (3) main sources of revenues. These are locally or internally generated revenues, government transfers and Donor funds.

 

Internally generated revenues include, property rates, licenses, ground rent, commercial undertakings, fees and fines

Government transfers include common fund. This is the main source of revenue for the district assemblies

Donor fund include supports from private institutions

Others sources of fund for the district assemblies include royalties, loans from financial institutions, grants from government.


FUNCTIONS OF DISTRICT ASSEMBLIES

1.      Making bye-laws

2.      Providing infrastructural development

3.      Maintenance of law and order

4.      Development of township layouts

5.      Socio-economic development of the district.
